U2 - Uncensored version of Achtung Baby - LP - 1991
On offer here is what many call one of the best albums ever. Achtung Baby not only revived U2 and put it on a course which would take them to the absolute top. But it also got many musicfans to step outside their comfort zone and check out what else is out there. Thank you, Bono and friends.
The album on offer is the original release, on vinyl of course. As CD’s were the norm then, not many vinyl is out there. This one is the European version. Only two were pressed. This is the second, recognizable by its uncensored picture of bassplayer Clayton. Adam in his Adams costume, as it were. A proud member indeed. No X here!
U2 rose to the world stages with Joshua Tree. But the follow-up Rattle and Hum was not favored much. Although it sold well, it raised a lot of negative feeling. Too grand, too far out, too easy. A band wanting to sound black for all the wrong reasons. The tour bored them, mostly playing the hits. Time for a long break!
They decided to leave the safety of Dublin and went to Berlin. The East part, with a horrendous hotel and a studio with a sinister Nazi past. Many think the album was recorded there in great unity but that was not the case. Adam and Larry wanted to go play old style rock, the Edge listened to electropunk and Bono to everything. The band divided in two camps. It was the writing and recording of One that brought them together again. They left with only three songs completed.
The rest was made in good old Ireland, just a 5 min. walk away from Bono’s house. They reinvented themselves, he said, they chopped down the Joshua Tree. Vital for the music, and the amazing sound was producer Daniel Lanois. And Eno. The latter came in every few weeks, listened to the work been done and ‘erased everything that was U2’.
Once finished everyone was amazed. The album starts with distorted sound, meant to put the listener in doubt. Is this U2? It spanned five singles, all charted hits. And set of the Zoo Tv tour, with the Trabants in the rafters as spotlights.
The 20th and 30th anniversaries were celebrated with special deluxe versions, even an ‘Uber’ box with Bono’s Fly sunglasses. The 40th would be celebrated by a tour but Covid put an end to that. Instead they opened the Sphere concert hall in Vegas with 40 amazing shows.
You probably have the album on cd. But you should own it on vinyl. This one is the real thing. And uncensored at that! It is in wonderful condition, near mint all around. No damages on the sleeve, no scratches on the vinyl, check the pictures. It wil be preciously packed and swiftly send.
