M.C. Escher (1898-1972) - "Tower of Babel" (1928)

Author: Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972) Title: "Tower of Babel" (1928) Size: 65 x 55cm Copyright: The M.C. Escher Company - Baarn - The Netherlands. Offset print, made on 180g matt paper. Displays a vivid and sharp image quality. Just the right size to frame. Impressive effect when framed. Shipping in a rigid tube via certified express mail. It is possible to collect more than one object, from the same auction, in the same shipment. This is a woodcut print in which Escher depicts the biblical Tower of Babel from an unusual perspective—looking straight down from above. Instead of showing the tower rising towards heaven, as in traditional images, Escher emphasizes its spiral structure and the tiny figures clustering around it. The work already shows his fascination with perspective, geometry and impossible spaces, even though it’s an early piece in his career. Escher created Tower of Babel during his time in Italy, where he travelled extensively and sketched many architectural motifs. He later said he was intrigued by the story of human ambition and confusion, which resonated with the disordered yet ordered patterns he saw in nature and cities. This print is also one of the first times he used a “bird’s-eye” view—an angle he would continue to explore in later, more complex works.
