Kipling's well known collection of Jungle Book children's tales, with his own illustrations, and colour plates Kipling's famous collection of twelve tales (with poems), such as "How the Camel got his Hump," "How the Leopard got his Spots" and "How the Alphabet was Made." Kipling himself did all illustrations. Each tale has a typical theme of a particular animal being modified from an original form to its current form by the acts of man, or some magical being. For example, the Whale has a tiny throat from a swallowed mariner who tied a raft in there to block the whale from swallowing others. The Camel has a hump given to him by djinn as punishment for the camel refusing to work This collectible edition is illustrated with black and white drawings by the author, and 12 full-page colour plates, including coloured frontispiece by Joseph M. Gleeson. Published by Macmillan and Co. Limited, London, 1914. Publisher’s original dark blue boards with gilt lettering and gilt design on front board and to spine. Top page edges gilt. Book Dimensions: 24.5 x 18.5 cm and Number of Pages: 249 + 2 pages of Authors’ books Condition Firm and well-bound book. External covers in nice shape, slightly marked and with light wear to corners, and edges, and minor rubbings to head and foot of spine. Internally; the book in very good condition. Old ink inscriptions to inside front cover page. Contents are fresh and clean, with some foxing to the first free endpaper pages. All plates are present and in excellent condition. Nice copy, without the usual evidence of handling by younger children (Collectible Copy) (Please see pictures).
