The damage must be reported to your local post office within 7 days of delivery, and promptly to us and Catawiki support. 【Product details】 This Showa period suzuribako (writing box) set is finished in a translucent brown-red lacquer that allows the layers beneath to subtly show through, and comes with its original signed box and leaflet. The set includes an inkstone, a copper water dropper, and a fitted cushion. The lid of the box depicts Kaisei (魁星), a deity traditionally revered in China and Japan as a god of learning and literary fortune. Kaisei, also called “Great Kaisei Master” or “Great Kaisei Lord,” is usually shown in the form of a demon holding a brush and an ink pot, symbolising success in scholarship and advancement through examinations. The image here follows that convention, with Kaisei portrayed carrying an ink pot and brush. The underside of the lid bears the artist’s signature and seal. The copper water dropper is decorated in maki-e with auspicious motifs: one magatama (comma-shaped jewel), two magatama symbolising yin and yang, and three magatama forming a tomoe crest. These designs emphasise harmony, balance, and protection. The artist, Shoji Hoshin (1898–1993), was the son of Shōji Chikushin, a leading disciple of the famed lacquer master Shibata Zeshin. Hōshin inherited this prestigious lineage of lacquer artistry, distinguished himself at early Nitten exhibitions, and worked extensively on the restoration of national treasures and cultural properties. He was honoured with the Cultural Property Restoration Merit Award for his contributions. The wooden storage box also bears the artist’s signature and seal. There are a few small lacquer chips, light wear, and minor blemishes on the set, as well as minor blemishes on the storage box, but overall it remains in good used condition.
