The exquisite composition depicts mountains and temples in a distant snowy haze, and a woman in a kimono standing on the stage of the serene Kiyomizu Temple. First published in 1932. As a modern printmaker, Hasui Kawase gave first priority to the atmosphere of a place. In particular, their obsessive interest in depicting light characterizes the dreamlike atmosphere of their prints. Artists like Kawase Tomosui expressed a romantic yearning for nature, his rural roots, and the warmth of wooden architecture that was being lost in the Tokyo metropolis. Most of his prints were destroyed in a fire the year before his death. He was recognized as a Living National Treasure.
