Colorful Brocade – Pintura de carpa koi con pigmento dorado por Mitsuru Matsuura - Papel - Mitsuru Matsuura / 松浦満 (1920–2016) - Japón - Periodo Shōwa (1926-1989)
A luminous koi glides through waters painted in layers of jade and turquoise, touched with gold.
This hanging scroll depicts a single koi carp swimming through an aquatic realm rendered in flowing washes of teal, emerald, and azure. The fish's body is painted in white with patches of orange and gray, its form delicate yet full of life. Gold pigment appears subtly within the composition, adding a quiet luminosity to the watery depths. The background is composed of translucent layers that evoke the shifting play of light beneath the water's surface. The artwork is mounted on a scroll with a beige brocade border. The wooden box bears an ink inscription reading "Colorful Brocade" (彩錦) and is signed "Shōhei" (小沛頭題) with a red seal. The painting itself is signed "Shōhei" (小沛筆) with a red artist's seal.

About Mitsuru Matsuura
Mitsuru Matsuura (1920–2016) was a distinguished member of the Nitten (Japan Art Academy Exhibition), one of Japan's most prestigious art organizations. He studied under Keigetsu Matsubayashi (1876–1963), a master of modern nihonga (Japanese-style painting) known for his classical landscapes and refined brushwork. Matsuura specialized in koi carp and aquatic subjects, developing a distinctive style that combined traditional nihonga techniques with a lyrical sense of color and movement. His works have been exhibited at numerous Nitten exhibitions and are held in private collections throughout Japan. Matsuura's paintings are recognized for their delicate use of pigment and gold leaf, capturing the grace and vitality of his subjects with poetic restraint.
