France, County of Maine. In the name of Herbert I Éveille-Chien (1015–1035 AD). Denier (Silver, 20.6 mm, 1.4 g). Obv: ✠ COMES CENOMANNIS. Monogram of Herbert I. Rev: ✠ SIGNVM DEI VIVI. Two pellets and Α Ω around small central cross pattée. Reference: Boudeau 170. Duplessy 398. The County of Maine was an important feudal territory centered on Le Mans in western France. After Herbert I Éveille-Chien, his successors continued striking deniers in his name, preserving his monogram and legends long after his death. This immobilized coinage reflects the prestige of established monetary types in medieval Europe, where familiar designs often outlived the rulers who introduced them.
