Lot of two ‘Alice in Wonderland’ books, complete with the scarce original dust jackets, and including the short work ‘Bruno's Revenge’.

1)
‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’.
Illustrated by David Walsh.
Published by Blackie & Son Limited, London and Glasgow.

Pictorial dust jacket, publisher’s red cloth with silver lettering and rules to spine, top edges red, decorative endpapers (with grey hourglass design), 4 colour plates, 128 pages, 18.2 x 12.4 cm.

First Walsh edition, 1954 (undated).
Date according to Lovett.
In the Stories Old and New series.
Lovett 347.

The four vibrant colour plates in this uncommon edition of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ are by David Walsh, who would go on to illustrate a second, completely different, version of the story in 1962, for Ward Lock and Company.

The book itself is undated, but the 1954 gift inscription to the dust-jacket flap confirms this as being the first Walsh edition. (Note that later printings have black lettering to the spine, instead of silver.)

2)
‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. With Bruno’s Revenge
’.
Illustrated by Helen Monro.
Published by Thomas Nelson and Sons Ltd, London.

Pictorial dust jacket, publisher’s textured blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine, colour frontispiece plate, around 75 line drawings (including 8 full page, all blank to reverse; plus assorted in-text illustrations and vignettes), 220 pages, 19 x 12.2 cm.

Undated edition, circa 1932.
In Nelson’s Famous Books series.
Lovett 278.

The numerous illustrations in this 1930s edition are by the Scottish artist Helen Monro, a notable glass engraver and an influential teacher, who also worked as a book illustrator. ‘Alice in Wonderland’ was her first major publishing commission, and she made her Alice a typical child of the period, with bobbed hair in Jazz Age style.

Note that the main jacket illustration is by the Jersey artist Edmund Blampied, well known for his lavish 1939 version of J. M. Barrie’s ‘Peter Pan’ – among the very last deluxe gift-books of the so-called Golden Age of illustration. The spine illustration is by an unknown artist.

The book also includes Lewis Carroll’s short piece ‘Bruno’s Revenge’, originally published in ‘Aunt Judy’s Magazine’ in 1867, and later used as the basis for his fantasy ‘Sylvie and Bruno’.
