Born in Athens, he was the son of the demoticist professor Panagios Lorentzatos (1872–1941). Though he studied at the School of Philosophy at the University of Athens, he never obtained a degree. A leading intellectual voice of postwar Greece, Lorentzatos was renowned for his penetrating literary criticism and translations. In 1988, he was awarded the First State Prize for Criticism/Essay, which he famously declined, and in 2001 he received the Ouranis Foundation Prize for his life’s work.
