The painting is framed in old frame which presents some impacts. Signed on the lower right corner, and signed and dated in 1947 on the back. It presents a minor scratch on the paint which is barely noticeable (as may be seen in the photo)
Matías Álvarez Ajuria (1914-1969). Born in Bilbao on February 24th, 1914, he died in January 1969.
For ten years he studied at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios of Bilbao. His teachers were Federico Sáenz, who taught him natural drawing, and Higinio Basterra, who made known the secrets of modelling. He completed his artistic knowledge of colour with Angel Larroque. The first collective exhibition in which he took part was the one organized by the Asociación Unión Arte, Bilbao, in 1934. The critics treated him well. In 1943 he obtained a travel scholarship to go round Spain, a prize awarded by Educación y Descanso, at the Exposición Nacional. He also attended the exhibitions of Palma de Mallorca (III Salón de Otoño) and the Exposición Provincial de Bellas Artes of Bilbao (1945). In 1947 he held a solo exhibition in Bilbao. As part of the group called "Cuatro pintores Vizcaínos" he exhibited in 1948 in Madrid at Sala Macarron and in 1950 in Madrid and Bilbao, returning to Madrid in 1958, when he exhibited his paintings at Sala Toisón, with the group "Pintura bilbaína", later taking part, in 1962, at the Exposición Nacional de Bellas Artes of Madrid. Matías Alvarez Ajuria is one of the founders of the group "Los cinco plásticos", well known especially in the Basque Country. He has obtained the following awards: Prize at the Exposición Nacional de Educación y Descanso (1943); Accésit at the III Salón de Otoño (1944); Third medal at the Exposición Provincial de Bellas Artes de Bilbao (1945). His most notable works: Concierto, which he presented at the I Bienal Hispanoamericana de Arte (Madrid, 1951), Naturaleza muerta and Vista de Compostela.
In May 1970, an exhibition in homage to his memory was held in Bilbao, at Sala Illescas.
