Gentleman in top hat and felt hat edge. The original hung on the premises of P Leendert, a pharmacy of Bolkenstein at Leidschestraat 88-92 in Amsterdam. A pharmacy has been located in this building since 1742

A gaper served as an advertising sign for pharmacists, it was used in order to attract customers to the shop. These were attached to the façade from the 17th century. The gaper is not yawning, but his mouth is open in order to take his medication.

Gapers are genuine folk art products and were only seen in the Netherlands and Flanders
