This is a superb set of Napoleon 111 table linen with , for a change 6 matching napkins measuring 63X80CM.
The fabric goes back to 1870 when it was first woven and it is therefore surprising that this linen is still in such good condition. It was very popular in the 20s and almost everybody who could afford it decked their Sunday lunch table with this exquisite linen. It fell out of favour afterwards and was put back into the armoires. Very recently there has been a very popular resurgence ,particularly with the Italian and Spanish and of course it is superb for outdoor luncheons and also brunch.
This is a fairly "rare" design as it has not the vibrant read colours, but rather muted with soft reds and yellow bands.
The fabric is a very soft linen. The initials B.A. are very well embroidered and have a beautiful flow. The table linen has two sets of initials, opposite each other, but as the cloth is square one can also use it the other way round and have it horizontal on the table. The red borders have stylistic leave patterns. the white is filled in with elegant small bouquets of flora.
We have been able to get 4 table linen from the same source, although this is the only one with matching napkins.
There have been 2 small old repairs. ( see last 2 photos)This has nothing to do with the fabric itself, but due to the French smoking at the time whilst having lunch/dinner and the hot ash falling on the fabric. Also because of the fine fabric the horizontal and vertical stripes have been woven onto the fabric, are therefore thicker and thus causing some "puckering".
This is "old linen" with all its charm and especially its rich history so it cannot be considered new.
