This is a exceptional Napoleon 111 ( approx. 1870 ) cotton and linen table linen with 12 napkins .
It is rare in the sense of it's dimension of 4 meter in length. I have not come across this length before. They normally come with a maximum length of 2m40 and these are already difficult to get hold of.
This very vibrant and so very French table linen became very popular in the 1920's and those French who could afford it would have their tables decked in this linen and even on Sundays. After a while though it lost it's appeal and they were put back in the armoires and not to be seen again until recent.
Like fashion, if you keep it long enough it will become fashionable again.
Of late it has made a resurgence and particularly with the French who love to use this bright colour for their country kitchen , but also for outdoor luncheons and particularly for brunch in the country. This is a marriage, as the table linen came without napkins, but as it happened I was offered these at the same time from a different source.. The napkins measure 68X78CM with the large initials C.B. measuring 4X6CM. The designs are slightly different, but colours are identical and I think it makes a perfect match. And of course the table linen can also be used the other way. The top of the linen has a single flower with some green. The red borders are dotted with clover leaves and small aster flowers. Please note the corners how vibrant red they are and of course if you turn it over the other side it becomes more faded red.
The sides, adjacent to the red borders, have continual garlands with compositions of leaves and held together at top and bottom by a small oval wreath of flowers.
We have taken many photos and have decked the table to give you some idea what can be achieved.
