This is a very rare table linen with 24 napkins.
The Provenance , we obtained this set from a noble family at Pas de Calais which is the Northern Region of France.
The family informed me that it has never been used by them and only once by the Grandfather which the owner still remembered as a small boy as he counted the family members and the occasion has always remained in his mind. And this proves the point as there are still 24 napkins in absolute mint condition and so is the table linen.
I just could not wait to start dressing the table setting. However it needed badly washing etc. as it had been in the armoire since 1915 and only taken out on one occasion
We have worked it out that the table linen at 4m70 long can indeed sit 24 persons and this was confirmed by the owner of the beautiful Manor house.
( 10 on either side and two at each the top and bottom of the table. We decked the table for 10 at 3m50 long - 5 on either side.)
The fabric is a very fine, long staple cotton mixed in with silk and has a wonderful luxurious feel
There are 2 sets of initials in the centre and opposite each other with the letters P.M. and they are sumptuously embroidered and with such elegance.
They measure 10X20 cm.
On either side of the table linen are raised woven borders which gives the linen a perfect finish.
The napkins measure 88x75cm which gives away the date when it was made as approx.after 1920 the dimension of napkins became smaller due to increased prices of raw materials. The napkins have the same initials P.M. which we learned recently stood for Pierre Marie ( Men often had the name Marie added to their first name) The initials are 6x13 cm in dimensions and again have the woven raised borders at top and bottom.
We have taken many (35) photos to show the sheer beauty of the table linen ànd napkins.
