This has become a rare item and not found very often now and was used to keep the "negligée" in ( ladies nightgown).
After use from the previous night the nightgown would be carefully folded back into the case by the chamber maid and deposited rather demonstratively on the bed cover as reminder.
They are completely handmade ,often with scalloped edges and embroidered by the girls in the sewing room of the Chateau at Brantôme and always have/had a soothing message on them like "Goodnight" or "sleep well".
Nowadays useful to put your private belongings in, like jewels, silver cutlery,
or even making into a scatter cushion for the bedroom. etc.
We are adding another case in which is measuring 40X25cm which is simpler version with just open cutwork and scalloped edgings.
