This again is a bedspread from the Aveyron region and near Albi from a hamlet called Almayrac where the great, great grandmother of the lady we bought these 8 covers from knitted these for each of her 7 children.
For most of all these years they have been kept in Armoires and not seen the delight until we obtained them and thus they were all in remarkable condition. My impression is that they were knitted as a wedding gift, put away in the armoire and never used.
They were not practical of course as in those days, as in Austria, everybody slept under the enormous eidredons ( duvet covers, which were filled with real down and were very light and warm) But to deck the beds during the day time was not a practical solution.
This cover is exceptionally large and wide and there must have been a reason for this as bed of 1m80 just did not exist. They were 90cm ( sleigh beds or maximum 1m10) Some French still sleep in 1m40 width beds.!!
It is a simple yet elegant design with beautifully finished scallops and finished with frills.
The crease in the centre is where for all these years the cover has been folded and we will steam this out.
