FRENCH VICTORIAN TABLE LINEN (5) - Linen - Early 20th century
This is a excellent set of table linen, albeit with only 4 serviettes, so suitable for intimate dinner parties, or even a fun outside picnic.
The fabric design is the typical "check board" linen which was so very popular in the 20s., as virtually every French household would deck their table with this design as there was little else available, other than the damask linen which in those days was very expensive. It then got out of fashion and "fortunately" was put back in the armoire for another day. It is very sturdy linen. The initials either being M.C. or M.F. are well embroidered and each letter holding a tiny branch with some leaves. On the linen the monograms measure 10cm, whereas on the napkins 5cm. The colour red is vibrant and lifts the entire "look". The napkins at 72cmX90cm are very generous and hints that they are early 20th C. when large was popular.
When holding against he light for any repairs 2 napkins have "old repairs" and somehow difficult to detect as they blend in with the squares of the fabric.
This has nothing to do with inferiority, but purely the French in those days were heavy smokers and whilst reaching out for the ashtray hot ash would drop on the napkins on the way.
Please see last 2 photos.
Condition is great ,but please do remember these are still vintage items.
