John O'Carroll (1958) - Place XX

Description
John O'Carroll (1958) - Place XX
Carborundum et tempera sur panneau - Signé à la main - 2018

John O'Carroll mainly uses gold, gesso and egg-tempera paint; materials used in early Christian, Coptic icons that helped inspire him to create this series. The early icons of the Greek Orthodox monastery of St Katherine in the Sinai Desert – where O'Carroll spent some time with the monks – also permanently influenced his work. With these special materials he gives a beautiful interpretation of these worlds; after all, both the landscape in Cornwall and that in Egypt are on the edge of human civilisation. Places where, due to the soil conditions and the climate, human habitation is hardly possible. This brings you, as an artist, into contact with the landscape and its history; it becomes a place.
