This work, made in 1954, represents a view of Milan in the past: Via Laghetto, Via Festa del Perdono. The painter expresses the atmosphere of that historical period with great intensity: the people, the shops, life. A rare and valuable work, also because it’s the testimony of an era. The mother of the work offerer, at the time an eight-year-old little girl, was present during its execution.
This is a family painting, and it was commissioned by my great-grandfather, who owned the small restaurant at the time.
My great-grandfather, who was born in Trani in 1891 and was a wine dealer, arrived in Milan in the 1920s and transformed the old Laghetto inn into Vinicola Italiana. From the early 1950s the place was also frequented by musicians and painters.
