It is hereby expressly emphasised that this lot consists of 9 individual lithographs and not 'books'.

From H. E. Dresser's "A History of the birds of Europe...", volume 5 (1871-81) and volume 6 (1871-81), 4 excellently preserved old coloured lithographs, on slightly yellowish strong paper, are offered:

1) Larger spotted eagle ‚Aquila Clanga’ - Schelladler
Artist: Edward Neale Engraver: M. & N. Hanhart
Dimensions: 30,5 x 23cm, close trimmed.

2+3) Griffon Vulture ‚Gyps Fulvus‘ - Griffon vultures, old and young
Artist: Joseph Wolf Engraver: William Matthew Hart

4) Saker ‚Falco Sacer‘ - Saker Falcon
Artist: J. Wolf and Joseph Smit Engraver: M. & N. Hanhart
Dimensions: 31 x 23cm

All photos are taken in their original size and enlarged to give a better impression of details and colours. The lithographs are free of stains, the condition can be seen well in the photos in original size.
All 4 lithographs are accompanied by the complete English ornithological description in b/w copies from a copy of the 'Smithsonian Libraries' (see photos for Aquila Clanga at the end).

The artist Joseph Wolf (1820-99) created his first masterpiece for Schlegel's "Traité de Fauconnerie" (1844-53), for which he supplied 12 magnificently coloured lithographs of birds of prey.
His many lithographs for Dresser's "A History of the birds of Europe..." are all of a high artistic standard and, for any ornithologist, unrivalled detail and splendid colour.
For many experts, Joseph Wolf, who was not only an outstanding illustrator but also a proven field ornithologist, was artistically on a level with his Dutch colleague J. G. Keulemans.
Wolf's lithographs are highly sought after on the market, which is also reflected in the prices.
