All 4 lithographs are accompanied by the complete English ornithological description in b/w copies from a copy of the 'Smithsonian Libraries' (see photos for Aquila Clanga at the end).
The artist Joseph Wolf (1820-99) created his first masterpiece for Schlegel's "Traité de Fauconnerie" (1844-53), for which he supplied 12 magnificently coloured lithographs of birds of prey.
His many lithographs for Dresser's "A History of the birds of Europe..." are all of a high artistic standard and, for any ornithologist, unrivalled detail and splendid colour.
For many experts, Joseph Wolf, who was not only an outstanding illustrator but also a proven field ornithologist, was artistically on a level with his Dutch colleague J. G. Keulemans.
Wolf's lithographs are highly sought after on the market, which is also reflected in the prices.
From the first edition of Claude W. Wyatt's "British Birds being coloured illustrated ..." 5 excellently preserved old coloured lithographs in the original size 32,5 x 25,26cm - not cut - are offered.
