It is hereby expressly emphasised that this lot consists of 9 individual copper engravings and not 'books'.
In the work "Compléments de Buffon, corrigée et augmentée par l'Auteur" in the second edition (Paris, Pourrat Frères, 1838-41), René Primevère Lesson took many plates from the earlier work "Compément ou histoire naturelle des animeaux rares ..." (Paris, Baudouin Frères, 1828-30), and expanded and refined them in 10 volumes with a total of 181 copper engravings.
From volume 2 of this new edition 9 excellently preserved old coloured copper engravings in quarto format (26 x 17,5cm) are offered.
All boards are in very good condition according to their age. One panel (25 x 16cm) has small foxing in image 4 (second to last photo).
At the time, the bookbinder obviously cut the copper engravings to book size, which led to an off-centre offset of the plate print.
A copy of the same work from the Smithsonian Libraries shows a similar, even stronger, off-centre offset (see 2 last photos).
The illustrations are slightly zoomed in to give a better impression of the details and colours. Comparison between the enlarged image and the original can be seen in the first two photos.
18 black and white copies of a Smithsonian Libraries copy with title page and detailed ornithological descriptions of all engravings are included.
