Jan Altink enrolled in the Academie Minerva in 1900. He won many prizes and medals. In 1911, he received his license to teach drawing. He earned his living by teaching evening drawing courses and as working as a decoration painter. In March 1918, he took part in the Pictura exhibition in the museum with four oil paint paintings. In May 1918 he was one of the founders of the art circle De Ploeg and he came up with the name.
