The Elector of Brandenburg did not support Munster and Cologne in their battle against the Dutch Republic; because of increasing French interests he feared a threat to the European balance of power. The Elector chose the side of the Republic under threat; his choice was also influenced by the fact that his cousin William was given a responsible post in the Republic. Denmark, Hesse-Kassel, Lüneburg-Celle and Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel joined Brandenburg in September 1672. When the Viennese Emperor also joined in the same month (after major French military successes in the Netherlands), the alliance had the wind in its sails. An amy of 40,000 men set sail for the Netherlands and although it did not come to an encounter with the French, the gain of the alliance was that a large number of French soldiers were withdrawn from the Dutch front. The ‘Tractaet’ offered here is a rare contemporary edition of the agreement between the countries mentioned.
