Decretum. Comm: Bartholomaeus Brixiensis and Johannes Teutonicus. Mainz : Peter Schoeffer, 13 Aug. 1472.
Fragment of 25 leaves (3 bifolios and 19 single folios) from a very early incunabulum printed by Peter Schöffer. Large folio, very sturdy paper. Printed in red and black, in two columns, surrounded by glosses. One leaf with a very beautiful gilt-heightened initial within a border, with hand-painted
floral motifs in pink, blue and green. Hundreds of hand-set rubrications and initials in red and blue. Leaf size: 47.3 × 33.3 cm; type area: 36 × 26 cm.
Peter Schöffer (or Schoeffer) worked in Johann Gutenberg's studio in Mainz in 1455. Later that year he would testify in the case of Johann Fust vs. Johannes Gutenberg, regarding the loan Fust had made to Gutenberg. In 1456 Fust began a new partnership with Peter Schöffer, who was clearly called in for his technical knowledge of Gutenberg's processes.
Rare edition of an early incunabulum edition printed by one of the most important printers from Gutenberg's circle. Some restorations to the paper, old dry moisture stain at the top of some pages, discolouration and small tears in margins, as usual. The pictures provide a good impression of the condition of this lot.
