Early post-incunabulum edition of the authoritative historiography of Venice by Justinian.
Folio, lean, flexible sixteenth-century parchment binding. Leaves are largely clean, but have spots in the margin. Restored hole in blank part of the last leaf, and hole in penultimate leaf, with loss of text over 5 lines (see picture). Leaf I8 is missing.
The work was first printed by Bernardus Benalius in Venice, 1493 (ITSC: “not before 31 Jan. 1492/93”). A second edition, almost identical in type to the first, followed in 1534, by Antonio Brucioli.
This is probably the later edition from 1534, which is characterised by its own title page (missing here), with a misplaced text fragment from the Orationes by the same printer on verso of the last page, and in some gestures a colophon with year 1492 at the end of the preface. These features are missing in this copy.
However, the book has been granted an export permit by the Italian ‘Ministero per i beni e le attivita culturali e per il turismo’, which is responsible for export permits for art and other antique or culturally significant artefacts, on the basis of the first edition from 1493. A copy of the export permit from 2020 is included. In any case, this incunable edition consists of different variants, cf. Hillard, Denise.
