In order to avoid misunderstandings, it is expressly pointed out that this offered object is 1 single sheet and not 1 book.

From the magnificent major work of the engraver and naturalist Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) 'Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium', Amsterdam 1705, the rare copper engraving plate XLIX is offered in a colourful old colour. This uncut copper engraving in large folio format (52 x 35cm) is in excellent condition. The area of the coloured copper engraving is flawless and very clean.
This work was published simultaneously in a Latin and Dutch edition.
The Latin edition notes as the date of publication "... apud Gerardum Valk, Anno MDCCV." The simultaneous Dutch edition hides this date.

After her return from Surinam in 1701, the completion of the work took over 3 years until its publication in 1705. Because her strength was no longer sufficient, Maria Sibylla Merian was only able to engrave plates 11, 14 and 35 of the 60 large-format engravings herself. 21 plates, including plate XLIX, were engraved by Joseph Mulder.

The text for this work was written without exception by Maria Sibylla Merian, and she coloured it together with her daughters Dorothea and Johanna.
In addition to the coloured copperplate intaglio prints, reprints were also produced at that time, but as 'planographic prints' they are somewhat paler in tone and have no engraver's signatures and plate numbering.

In her travelogue, she described the peculiar transformation of a beetle ('lyre-box cicada') into a 'lantern bearer'. During this metamorphosis, the lyre-box cicada develops into a 'fly' which still has the body of the cicada but has already developed the wings and then transforms into the lantern-bearer (beetle and intermediate stage is shown in the figure).
