Steye Raviez - Portrait of Willem Frederik Hermans - oil on canvas, framed - signed bottom right - beautiful plain wooden frame, 45 × 55 cm - images size 39 × 49 cm - in fine condition
Wonderful characteristic portrait of a somewhat condescending Hermans, who looks at the viewer with a critical eye. Hella Haasse can be seen at the top left.
Steye Raviez (Amsterdam, 28 March 1943 - 20 February 2017) was a Dutch photographer. He was best known for his portraits of the writer Gerard Reve. He began his career in 1965 as a graphic designer for Haagse Post, but gradually switched to photography. In 1985, he switched to Vrij Nederland, for which he worked until 2001. He specialised in portrait photography.
He also did war reports from Kuwait during the Gulf War of 1990-1991, and also documented the squatters' riots in Amsterdam. Raviez won the Zilveren Camera four times. The book ‘De beste mensenfotograaf die ik ken’ (2016) gives a general overview of his photos and texts. (Wikipedia)
He has also painted portraits of a number of Dutch writers, such as Reve and Hermans.
