In 1908, the Maschinenfabrik Esslingen was instructed by the Königlich Württembergischen Staats Eisenbahnen (K.W.St.E.) to build a powerful passenger train tender locomotive. This locomotive was given the Series designation T5, and was deployed on the main and branch-line routes in Württemberg. The locomotive was designed with an axle length of 4000 mm to enable it to run a lot more smoothly. Up until 1920, 96 locomotives of this type were built, and in addition to passenger transport, they were also used for freight transport. After the First World War, three locomotives were reparation items handed over to France. The remaining 93 were transferred to the Deutsche Reichsbahn and received the numbers 75 001 up to and including 75 093.
After World War II, a further 89 units were taken over by the Deutsche Bundesbahn. However, as from 1959 the decommissioning of these locomotives commenced and by 1963 there was only one left as a Museum locomotive in Aulendorf. In 1968, the last T5 was also scrapped.
