VINIFICATION
Colheita’ is the Portuguese word for harvest and a Colheita Port is thus a wine from a single year and — specifically — an aged tawny port, matured solely in wood. These wines have some similarities with Warre’s Otima 10 and 20-Year-Old (both styles are old tawnies) but as wines from a single harvest, Colheita Ports distinctively reflect the individual characteristics of one year. Conversely, aged tawnies with an age indication are blended to express a consistent house style with little or no variation over time. 1992 was one of the driest winters on record but thanks to heavy rainstorms in early August and a summer that was not excessively hot, the vines delivered grapes in very fine condition with balanced maturations and good color.
TASTING NOTES
Attractive auburn core with an orangebrown rim. Subtle aromas of honeysuckle, butterscotch and marzipan, and delicate hints of honey and walnuts. The wine is silky smooth on the palate, revealing citrus, sweet orange notes that complement the creamy texture with crisp freshness. Soft caramel flavours combine with traces of quince and the long aftertaste suggests black tea and white pepper.
SERVING
This is an exclusively wood-matured Port and once bottled it is ready to be enjoyed. The wine should ideally be served lightly chilled to enjoy it at its best. Warre’s Otima Colheita Ports are a fine accompaniment of assorted sweet desserts and are equally pleasurable sampled on their own. Once open, the wine will keep for up to a month. Serve at a temperature between 14ºC and 16ºC.
HISTORY
Founded in 1670, Warre’s is the first and the oldest British port company established in Portugal. By the end of the 18th century, Warre’s had become one of the leading port companies, shipping 2,937 pipes in 1791, 10% of the total sold by 21 companies in that year. The Warre’s name is synonymous with the history of the British in Porto. Warre’s continues to be famous for its Vintage Ports, a reputation which began with its very fine late nineteenth and early twentieth century Vintages. This legacy has endured into the 21st century with the outstanding 2000, 2007, 2011 and 2016 Vintage Ports. The Warre's 2016 Vintage Port was awarded the No#14 spot in The Wine Spectator's prestigious Top 100 Wines of 2018, the highest ranking Portuguese wine. Today Warre's sources its grapes from the beautiful Quinta da Cavadinha in the Pinhão Valley, as well as Quinta do Retiro, Quinta da Telhada, Quinta do Alvito and Quinta das Netas. Warre's signature style is floral, fresh and elegant, reflecting the particular characteristics of these higher altitude vineyards.
