Antica lanterna pendente giapponese in bronzo, con stemma Aoi-mon dei Tokugawa sui piedini. - Bronzo - Giappone - Periodo Edo (1600-1868)

Item Description: This is an antique Japanese bronze hanging lantern (tsuri-dōrō / 吊灯籠), a type of suspended lantern traditionally hung from the eaves of shrines and temples to provide light. The piece displays the rich, deep patina characteristic of aged metal — a testament to its considerable age and the fine craftsmanship of its era. The lantern features a distinctive twelve-petal flower-tipped crown (jūni-ben hanasaki), a smoke-vent with openwork cloud motifs (kumosuke kemuri-dashi), and — most notably — decorative feet adorned with the aoi (hollyhock) crest (Aoi-mon), the celebrated heraldic emblem of the Tokugawa clan. The presence of this prestigious crest suggests the lantern was originally of high quality and social standing. A candle-holder plate (rōsoku-tate-zara) is included. The fire chamber (hibukuro) is considered a later addition and is currently mounted in the reverse orientation. It is believed that the lantern's base components — including the aoi-mon feet and the candle tray — represent the original, finer elements, while various replacement parts have been incorporated over the centuries. This is entirely consistent with the nature of antique metalwork that has remained in active use across generations. A rare and evocative piece of Japanese metalwork, combining historical gravitas with the warm aesthetic of a true antique. Size Height: 36.5 cm Width: 32 cm Condition This piece shows age-related wear throughout, including patina, scratches, rust, and hairline cracks; the openwork smoke vent has deformed due to cracking, and the thin metal construction has resulted in overall warping and bending. Some rivets securing the legs are missing, the joints throughout are loose, the finial atop the lantern is unstable (secured with later screws and nuts), and the fire chamber is installed in reverse orientation. The candle-holder needle is bent. NOITICE: The lot will be carefully packaged and sent by Japan Post, DHL or FedEx depend on the situation. It takes about 3 weeks to receive normally. Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Sometimes Customes or delivery company in your country contact you for Customs clearance via phone or email. Please make sure that you could answer the phone. If you don't, the parcel will return to me and it cost more double shipping fee for reshipping. I appreciate your cooperation.
