Jurojin molto pregevole, netsuke con rotolo della longevità - Legno - Giappone - Periodo Edo (1600-1868)
Jurojin is deity of longevity, originated from China’s Taoist pantheon. Described as a Chinese sennin (immortal), Jurojin is also a personification of the southern polar star. He is known as the immortal of the Northern Song dynasty (960–1127), and may have been a historical figure of the period. Jurojin holds scroll or walks with a staff with tied scroll and a fan. The deer, a symbol of longevity, usually (but not always) accompanies him as a messenger, as do other long-lived animals such as the crane and the tortoise.
Figures of Jurojin are considered auspicious.
Commonly shown as an old man with a long white beard carrying a knobbly staff with a scroll tied to it, on which is written the life span of all living things or, in other accounts, a record of all the good and bad deeds committed by all beings. Here it is represented reading scroll.
