This is an original not a 19th or 20th century impression.
In the foreground stand the King with his two captains. Count d’Artagnan and the Count de Montbron D’Artagnan was “Capitaine des Mousquetaires du Roi” and was ordered to advance with his company of musketeers to the area of the Tongerse Poort, where the final fall of Maastricht was eventually initiated. To support this operation, two batteries of artillery were placed on the St. Pietersberg to fire upon key points in the city. On June 25, 1673, the city fell into the hands of Louis XIV. However, d’Artagnan was killed in front of the city wall at the location where the Waldeckpark is situated today. Hopefully we found his body now in the Church of Wolder, near the city of Maastricht.
