Up for auction is a very rare lot of 5 banknotes from the Italian occupation of Montenegro (1941–1943), all featuring the official “VERIFICATO” overprint applied during Italian military administration in World War II. Following the Axis invasion of Yugoslavia in April 1941, Montenegro came under Italian control. Existing Yugoslav dinar notes were overprinted “VERIFICATO” (“verified”) to validate them for circulation under the occupation authority. These overprints were applied locally and represent a distinct and collectible wartime emergency monetary issue.
