The album was first released in 1978 and is considered an important milestone in the band's career. "Breathless" continues Camel's signature progressive rock style, characterized by sophisticated melodies, complex arrangements and expressive guitar and keyboard solos. The band is also characterized by the use of flute and saxophone, which enrich their sound. Unlike some previous Camel albums, "Breathless" is not a concept album. However, it contains a mix of instrumental pieces and songs with varying themes, including love, longing and personal reflection. Notable songs on the album include "The Great Marsh," "Rhayader," "Rhayader Goes to Town," and "Summer Lightning."
