Large Lola-Lola bracelet from Sulawesi This stunning piece was hand crafted by local artisans on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia, made with ancient techniques in brass, fabric, and natural fibers. The display of elaborate jewelry is of critical importance, especially in funeral ceremonies, to emphasize the status and wealth of the upper classes. The lola-lola were often of immense size and important family heirlooms, worn by noble women on ceremonial occasions. The surface of the ring around the center was then engraved with a spiral motif and multiple rows of radiating spikes. Bracelets like this were worn during ceremonies and funerals by women from the community of indigenous people residing in the Mamasa Regency in West Sulawesi.
