Named after the Latin word for "safe" or "protected," the brand is famous for its highly durable pilot watches and deep ties to military and aviation history.The story of Tutima begins in 1927 when Dr. Ernst Kurtz established two companies in Glashütte: UROFA (to make movements) and UFAG (to make finished watches). Kurtz saw that wristwatches were the future and used the name "Tutima" as a mark of quality for his best and most reliable timepieces. In 1941, Tutima released the iconic Flieger Chronograph. This watch changed history by being the first German chronograph with a flyback function. This complex feature (complication) lets the wearer reset and restart the stopwatch with a single push button, rather than having to stop, reset, and start it again. It was a vital tool for military pilots in the cockpit. Just days before the end of World War II in May 1945, the town of Glashütte was heavily bombed, and Soviet forces occupied the region. The factory's machinery was taken to the Soviet Union. However, Dr. Kurtz managed to escape to West Germany, bringing key craftsmen and tools with him, eventually settling in Ganderkesee. In the 1960s, a close associate of Kurtz named Dieter Delecate took over the company. Delecate guided Tutima through the difficult "quartz crisis" of the 1970s—a period when cheap battery-powered watches almost destroyed mechanical watchmaking. A massive milestone happened in 1985 when Tutima's Military Chronograph (Reference 798) was chosen as the official watch for the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) and NATO pilots. Following the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany, Dieter Delecate was determined to return to where it all began. In 2011, the company officially opened a brand-new, state-of-the-art manufacture in Glashütte. Today, Tutima is still proudly run by the Delecate family and continues to produce modern luxury watches, including the Tutima Glashütte Collections.
