Pair of Vintage Imperial Contemporary Bedside Tables — Attributed to Jan Kuypers A striking pair of vintage Canadian bedside tables by Imperial Contemporary, marked “Imperial Contemporary – Made in Canada”, dating from the Mid-Century Modern period, circa 1950s–1960s. The design is attributed to Jan Kuypers, the Dutch-Canadian designer associated with Imperial Furniture’s Contemporary collection. The pieces display several characteristic elements of this design language, including their architectural, geometric construction, tapered side panels, rounded edges and particularly distinctive sculptural wave-shaped drawer fronts. The tables feature a practical and elegant arrangement with an open upper compartment, a single sculptural drawer and a lower open shelf. Their warm honey-coloured wood finish and strong architectural form make them highly decorative examples of Canadian Mid-Century Modern furniture. Condition The pair is offered in original vintage condition and requires restoration/refinishing. As clearly visible in the photographs, the surfaces show signs of age and use, including scratches, marks, discoloration, wear to the original finish, surface stains and other imperfections. The tops and lower shelves show noticeable wear, while the drawer fronts retain their distinctive sculptural form but also show areas of wear to the finish. The structure appears complete and the drawers are present. The furniture would benefit considerably from professional cleaning, careful wood restoration and refinishing, while retaining the original character and patina. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the description and clearly show the current condition, including all visible signs of wear and imperfections.
