G & T Davison Newcastle - 18K Solid Gold Victorian Pocket Watch – Gold Dial - 1850-1900

Antique G & T Davison 18K Gold English Pocket Watch – No. 40823 – Circa 1870s A superb Victorian English pocket watch by G & T Davison of Newcastle-on-Tyne, dating approximately from the 1870s. The movement is clearly signed: G & T Davison Newcastle on Tyne Movement / watch number: 40823 G & T Davison were respected English watchmakers and chronometer makers active in Newcastle-on-Tyne during the second half of the 19th century. The firm is known for producing high-quality watches and chronometers, including pieces associated with maritime and Admiralty use. This particular example is especially attractive because both the case and the dial are made of 18K yellow gold. The beautifully preserved 18K gold dial features elegant black Roman numerals, a subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock and exceptionally fine hand-engraved floral decoration in the centre. The blued steel hands create a striking contrast against the rich gold surface. The 18K yellow gold case is finely finished with engine-turned decoration and an ornate central cartouche. The case retains its beautiful period character and is preserved in excellent condition for its age. The gilt mechanical movement is equally impressive, featuring finely engraved bridges and balance components with elaborate floral decoration. It is a traditional key-wound English mechanical movement, characteristic of high-quality Victorian watchmaking. The original-style winding key is included. Condition The watch is preserved in exceptional overall condition, especially considering its age of approximately 150 years. The 18K gold dial is in excellent condition, retaining its beautiful engraved decoration and original character. There is one scratch visible on the pictures. The 18K gold case is also extremely well preserved, with its engine-turned pattern and decorative details remaining clearly visible. The movement presents beautifully and demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship associated with fine 19th-century English watchmaking.
