ITEM: 具足 — Gusoku with Red Kuwagata Kabuto A complete set of Japanese samurai armor, gusoku, accompanied by its original gusoku-bitsu, the lacquered chest built for transporting and storing the piece. The Helmet The bachi is of zunari construction, the bowl formed from a small number of riveted plates with a smooth, continuous surface, without the raised rivet rows of a koboshi bowl. Mounted at the front is a large kuwagata in vermilion red lacquer, its two horns curving outward and upward in a wide, open silhouette. Between the horns sits the maedate: a flame-shaped ornament carved in gilded metal, with a Japanese character cut into its center, corresponding to the mon or personal crest of the original owner. The shikoro descends in stepped lacquered lamellae, with gold-toned odoshi lacing running through the entire piece. The Dō Cuirass built from horizontal lacquered plates in dark brown. The upper edge carries a band of textured aged-gold lacquer, a finishing technique usually reserved for the most visible areas of commissioned pieces. A tassel of orange thread hangs from the center, secured by a ring and cord. Kote The sleeves combine two protection systems: the upper arm is covered in silk fabric with an ochre floral motif, reinforced with kusari mail in a tight diamond weave; the forearm shifts to tsutsu-gote, the rigid, articulated tube of lacquered brown plates protecting from elbow to wrist as a single continuous piece. Sode Shoulder guards of lacquered lamellae in the same tone as the dō, with gold odoshi lacing running through each row. Kusazuri The tassets carry a series of circular medallions applied in gold, pale green, and red as riveted reinforcements over the brown lacquered plates, heraldic-style ornamentation distributed across several points of the piece. Haidate Thigh protection in fabric with a kikko motif, the woven hexagonal scale pattern. Suneate Shin guards in articulated black-lacquered slats, tied in ochre fabric, with a red leather panel at the lower section near the ankle. The Gusoku-bitsu Original chest in red-lacquered wood, fitted with wrought-iron corner mounts and hinges, and side handles of the same metal. Condition The lacquer is well preserved across all rigid plates, with the expected wear on the textile areas of the kote and haidate. No invasive restorations.
