Title: Primitive Mid-Century Modern: Bar and Appetizer Service Set by Macabo • Carved Wood (Bark-Effect), Bamboo and Metal • Italy, c. 1950.
Exceptional high-end bar service set designed produced by the prestigious firm Macabo (Cusano Milanino, Milan) in the mid-20th century (circa 1950)
Each piece has been meticulously turned in solid noble wood, showing a unique texturized exterior finish that realistically emulates the natural bark or striations of the tree.
This three-dimensional carving generates a superb visual and tactile contrast with the perfectly polished and satin-finished internal surfaces.
The set is presented in a very good general state of collectible conservation, maintaining all its key pieces and original structural complements:
Triple Platter for Nuts and Appetizers: A singular piece of the lot with a unified structure of three independent rounded cavities to accommodate different appetizers, physically connected to a slender vertical mast sculpted by hand that functions as a tabletop courtesy handle.
Thermal Pitcher / Table Thermos: With an anatomical profile and elegant fluting, topped with a high-brightness chrome-plated metal neck and its original insulating stopper.
Oval Service Tray: An elongated bowl with raised edges that incorporates a longitudinal handle made with natural bamboo cane molded with heat to curve it and adapt it to the tray. Due to the logical mechanical tension and expansion between two materials of a different nature (bamboo and solid wood) over the decades, a fissure manifests due to natural contraction on the edge of the wood adjacent to the described anchoring in the state of conservation section and that does not compromise its solidity.
Tabletop Nutcracker Bowl: An original spherical bowl turned to store walnuts or nuts with shells. It incorporates a central chrome-plated metal mast topped with a mushroom-shaped wooden knob, specifically designed with an integrated support to hang and present the mechanical pincer nutcracker.
State of Conservation:
The set is found in a very good general vintage condition, conserving a structural consistency reflected in the photographs. Being authentic pieces from the 50s that have been enjoyed, they present the logical and honest signs of use and the passage of time.
The serving tray is the element that manifests a greater surface wear and a natural crack or fissure due to contraction of the wood on one of its ribbed edges (see detail photograph). This opening is typical of the organic behavior of the solid pieces of this collection due to age and does not affect at all the sturdiness of the tray.
Triple of bowls for peanuts: the lower left bowl presents three radial fissures due to tension that are born from the center of the wood base. Same as with the tray, it is not a break by impact, but a natural reaction of the solid wood when losing its interior moisture with the years (contraction cracks).
None of these marks affects the structural sturdiness nor the magnificent aesthetic impact of the set on exhibition. The wood surfaces of all the set conserve their original nobility and the bark-effect relief maintains sharp.
