Art Deco “Floralies” Hyalite Glass Vase by Doyen, Belgium — Documented in the Factory Catalogue, c. 1930s
An elegant Art Deco “Floralies” vase by Doyen (Verreries Gobeleteries Doyen), Havré-Ville, Belgium, dating to the 1930s and documented in the original factory catalogue.
Standing 20 cm high, this is the medium-sized version of the model. Hand-blown in deep black hyalite glass, the vase features a beautifully rounded body and a gently flared neck with a softly scalloped rim, creating a pure sculptural silhouette characteristic of Belgian Art Deco.
Hyalite glass was deliberately produced with thicker walls to minimize transparency and achieve an intense, almost completely opaque black appearance. This technically demanding quality gives the glass its remarkable visual depth and substantial feel and is one of the characteristics for which original hyalite pieces are particularly appreciated by collectors.
Part of Doyen’s celebrated Floralies series, the model is illustrated in the original factory catalogue, providing documented provenance. Its minimalist form and glossy black surface make it equally striking in an Art Deco setting or a contemporary interior.
Condition: Good antique condition, especially considering that the vase is nearly 100 years old. Some minor surface scratches and signs of age and use are present and visible in the photographs. No chips or cracks.
A refined and collectible example of Belgian interwar glassmaking, combining Doyen’s elegant Floralies design with the distinctive depth and character of traditional black hyalite glass.
In the early 20th century, Jean-Baptiste Doyen and his son Gaston established a glass factory in Havré-Ville, near Mons, Belgium. Originally named Verreries Gobeleteries d’Havré-Ville, the company specialized in producing high-quality blown glassware, including tableware, lighting, and decorative pieces. Doyen’s work became particularly renowned for its Art Deco designs, featuring elegant shapes, refined engravings, and meticulous craftsmanship. A notable example is a set of mouth-blown glasses adorned with finely scoured olive shapes and intricate fan patterns, showcasing the exquisite attention to detail of the era.
Among Doyen’s most celebrated creations is the “Floralies” series, which embodies the refined elegance of Art Deco design. Produced in the early 20th century, these vases are distinguished by their bold geometric forms, intricate detailing, and rich, vibrant colors. One of the most remarkable models, no. 150, crafted in the 1930s, features striking vertical stripes and a distinctive corrugated collar, often produced in warm brown glass. Many pieces from the series still bear the “Floralies” label, preserving their legacy and making them easily recognizable among collectors.
Today, Doyen’s glassware remains highly sought after by enthusiasts and collectors of Belgian Art Deco pieces. Their timeless elegance and historical significance continue to make them prized additions to vintage collections, standing as a testament to Belgium’s rich glassmaking tradition and artistic heritage.
