Cicero - De oratore, Ciceronis ad Fratrem Libri III (3 Books on oratory techniques and correspondence) - 1546

1546 ALDO & PAOLO MANUZIO REVISED AND AUGMENTED SECOND EDITION ON ORATORY TECHNIQUES AND CORRESPONDENCE of Marcus Tullius Cicero (106 BC – 43 BC), was a Roman orator, politician and philosopher. This volume contains three books on the development of the orator, one of which is dedicated to his brother Quintus. A history and critical commentary on the most illustrious orators, including letters to Marcus Junius Brutus, one of Julius Caesar's assassins. And a polemic with the Roman Atticists of the Greek school, contrasted with the followers of Asianism, to which Cicero belonged. The Atticists advocated an austere, ascetic imitation of the classics, a simple oratorical model. Meanwhile, Cicero and the Asianists sought an oratory richer in rhythmic formulas and technical devices. Brutus was an Atticist and criticized Cicero for his Asian-style redundancy. However, after his first oratorical efforts, Cicero began to distance himself from these artificial oratorical models, moving toward greater moderation and stylistic variety, depending on the circumstances: for example, the sublime style, appropriate for a defense for high treason, would be ridiculous in a civil case over land ownership. In this volume, Cicero proposes to define the characteristics of the perfect orator and seeks to blend the two schools of oratory: simplicity of language with good eloquence, using the appropriate style for each occasion without falling into coldness and monotony. Beautiful antique full leather binding, in very good condition and richly decorated. THREE BOOKS/PARTS IN ONE VOLUME, COMPLETE 1546 EDITION. 1546 COMPLETE REVISED AND AUGMENTED SECOND EDITION from the publishing house of Aldo Manuzio and his son Paolo Manuzio. These books and letters provide a candid, personal record of Cicero’s daily life and political concerns, often regarded as a form of private journal. Together with Cicero's other letters to his younger brother Quintus and his friend Marcus Brutus, they are considered the most reliable sources of information on the Roman Republic, immediately after the assassination of Julius Caesar. The youngest son of Aldus Manutius, Paulus (1512-1574) was an influential publisher and one of the most prominent humanists of the Italian Renaissance. He was especially engaged in Latin literature and his outstanding reputation as a scholar was built upon his editions and commentaries on the works of Cicero. This work is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in Cicero's linguistic style and literary technique, and provides a fascinating window into the intellectual world of ancient Rome and remains a popular reference work to this day. AUTHOR: Marcus Tullius Cicero (106 BC – 43 BC), a Roman orator and philosopher, was one of the most important figures of all antiquity. His vast literary production, ranging from political speeches to philosophical and rhetorical writings, besides offering a valuable portrait of ancient Roman society, remained an example for all authors of the 1st century BC, so much so that it can be considered the model of classical Latin literature. A great admirer of Greek culture, through his work the Romans were also able to acquire a better knowledge of philosophy. Among his major contributions to Latin culture was, without a doubt, the creation of a Latin philosophical lexicon: Cicero, in fact, committed himself to finding the corresponding Latin word for all the specific terms of the Greek philosophical language.
