Heinrich Heine wrote "Prinzessin Sabbath" at the end of his life, while he was struggling with his own Jewish identity, his physical suffering, and the social humiliation Jews faced in Europe. He had converted to Christianity decades earlier in order to be accepted by society, but in old age he felt the emotional cost of that choice. Heine aimed to reclaim the beauty of Jewish identity and express how the Shabbat restores dignity to a people wounded by the world. The poem first published in 1851, portrays the Jewish Shabbat as a princess who once a week frees the Jewish person from the humiliations of everyday life and restores their dignity, beauty, and humanity. During the week this Jewish person is metaphorically compared to a dog—poor, beaten, mocked, exhausted—but when Sabbath arrives, he becomes Prince Israel again.
