Ilmari Tapiovaara Pirkka chair, designed in the mid-1950s and manufactured in Finland by Laukaan Puu. The chair has the characteristic Pirkka construction with a sculpted solid-pine seat and backrest combined with black-painted tapered legs and back supports. The underside retains the original manufacturer/designer branding. The stamp is worn but the “TAPIOVAARA / DESIGN” marking and parts of the Laukaan Puu marking remain visible. The wooden surface has been sympathetically restored while retaining the original form and character of the chair. There are age-related traces of use, including small marks, dents and surface variations visible in the photographs. The black-painted elements also show normal signs of age and use. The Pirkka series is one of Ilmari Tapiovaara’s best-known Finnish furniture designs and was originally produced by Laukaan Puu in the 1950s.
