Leipzig: Weidmannische Buchhandlung, 1791. 2 volumes. Vol I: [2], xiv, 336 pages; Vol II: 337-738 pages 15.7cm x 9.5cm. Full calf leather binding with gilt framed boards, gilt decorated and lettered spines, red edges, and printed endpapers. Second edition of this definitive Enlightenment-era collection of German Baroque epigrams, meticulously revised and vastly expanded by the prominent German poet and linguist Karl Wilhelm Ramler. This edition serves as an essential milestone in the transmission of 17th-century literature into the modern era. Originally compiled and heavily adapted from the rare 1654 Baroque original by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing and Ramler in 1759, this specific 1791 printing marks the first time the work was expanded with three completely new books of epigrams. It also includes an updated, extensive commentary and a vital historical glossary designed to decode archaic Baroque idioms for late 18th-century readers. The two-volume set stands as a profound representation of Enlightenment literary criticism, capturing Friedrich von Logau’s sharp wit, wartime observations, and societal critiques through a refined 18th-century lens.
Rubbing, bumping, and wear to the boards and spines. Both spines are fraying a bit at the top. In Vol I there are pencil markings and an Ex Libris stamp on the recto of the front flyleaf and pencil markings on the recto of the back free endpaper. In Vol II there are pencil markings on the verso of the front free endpaper and an Ex Libris stamp on the recto of the front flyleaf. Browning and spotting throughout in both volumes. The text is clear, the paper is crisp, and the binding is solid in both volumes. Overall, a nice set in good+ condition.
