Printed from 6 or 7 blocks on the full sheet of cream double japan laid paper. An example from the first edition of 1883 with vibrant colours and decorated margins and captioned cartouches lacking in later editions. Very good example with vibrant unfaded colours in excellent condition.

Kono Bairei bird and flower painter (Kacho-ga) and woodblock printer from the imperial city and old capital of Japan, Kyoto, studied from the age of 8 at the Maruyama School. At the age of 27 he transferred to the Nanga School and was instrumental in establishing the Kyoto School of Painting, eventually opening up his own studio to other painters. He became a disciple of Shiokawa Bunrin and published books of woodcuts in the mid to late Meiji Period of the 19th. century.
