These marbles offer a clear example of Roman funerary art at the beginning of the 3rd century AD. While hunting scenes, or cynegetic pastimes, were already widely seen in the Greek world, these were reproduced in the Imperial world in a variety of media such as mosaics, mural painting, and reliefs. Hunting evoked the life cycle of birth and death in nature, the relationship between man with animal, the exercise of power and the intellectual superiority of man over beast.

In the middle of the 2nd century AD sarcophagi were covered with scenes which represented mythical hunts such as those of Adonis, Meleager or Hippolytus. Although there is no consensus in the academic world as to the precise funerary significance associated with each of these myths, it is possible to consider that, through the tragic aspects of the scenes depicted, they were trying to evoke sorrow at the loss of a beloved person. The metaphoric comparison between the deceased and the heroic or divine nature of the mythical protagonist, also points to the possibility of immortality. It is, therefore, an iconography which exalts the triumph of eternal life over death.
