Frank Letterie, 1984
Bronze cast medal, 80 mm
Quality is Extremely Fine.
Medal made as a free assignment, for which the artist chose a book that was near to his heart: Der Butt by German author Günter Grass. The flounder is an ancient, talking and all-knowing fish. The fisherman who returns him to the sea at the beginning of the story, is rewarded with immortality and the flounder will guide him as a mentor through the centuries.
Obv. The first-person narrator of the novel, Günter Grass in a symbiotic connection with the flounder whispering words of advice in his ears.
Rv. A man and a woman looking at a child attentively and lovingly. They are surrounded by a hedge of pumpkin leaves, a type of arbour, popular in northern Germany.
Also see the scan of the original leaflet (not part of this lot).
