Cobalt blue soliflore by Val Saint Lambert. This soliflore is included in the catalogue from the 1990s and is designed by René Delvenne. Only the current emerald green and ruby red versions were mentioned in the catalogue, this is the rarer cobalt blue version.
The vase bears the model name 'Solignac' and is signed 'Val Saint Lambert' at the bottom, in addition, the vase still bears the fully intact gold label of Val Saint Lambert.
A soliflore is a small vase that is used for only a few flowers, roses for instance.
This vase is made of crystal with a lead content of approx. 33-40%, which is a lot higher than the legally determined 24%. It gives the piece a gorgeous quality and brilliance. The technique to make this bicoloured crystal is called doubling: the form is mouthblown of clear crystal and after resting the crystal, it is doubled (also referred to as ‘bubbled’) with cobalt-blue crystal. Then the blue crystal is cut back, exposing the clear crystal again. Subsequently, the facets are cut and the last step is a polishing with lava rock and a linen cloth. This labour-intensive process produces a marvellous result of the highest quality.
Today, Val-Saint-Lambert has a presence in more than forty countries, from the USA to Saudi Arabia, from Spain to Japan. It has become the business card of Walloon. The government took a stake in the company in the 1980s due the impending bankruptcy of the company. A Val Saint Lambert piece, famous for its marvellous double-coloured cut crystal, is a sought-after collector’s item or an expensive business gift, also for princes and diplomats. The company for instance supplied the glass seats (amongst others, because of the ‘frigidity’ of the material) for the World Exhibition in Sevilla. The offering has been broadened and modernised since, though the manufacturing of the unique pieces is still artisanal.
The lot will be securely packaged and shipped with insurance in fitting (possibly double) packaging.
