Vase 'Crémone' in rare prune crystal. This version is cut according to the cutting method '1946', which was designed for the tableware 'Mery' and 'Esneux'. However, this vase was included in the catalogue in the 1980s, in various cutting methods.
The vase is in perfect condition and signed 'Val St Lambert' on the bottom.
‘Prune’ is a sought-after, modern and rare colour. Besides the three classic colours emerald-green, ruby-red and cobalt-blue, Val Saint Lambert also offers a collection of other colours: china-green, japanese-yellow, prune and amethyst.
This vase is made of crystal with a lead content of approx. 33-40%, which is a lot higher than the legally determined 24%. It gives the piece a gorgeous quality and brilliance. The technique to make this two-colored crystal is called doubling; the vase is mouth-blown in clear crystal, then after resting of the crystal the piece is doubled (also called bubble) with prune crystal, after which the brown-red crystal is cut away again, so that the clear crystal becomes visible again. Subsequently, the facets are cut and the last step is a polishing with lava rock and a linen cloth. This labour-intensive process produces a marvellous result of the highest quality.
Today, Val-Saint-Lambert has a presence in more than forty countries, from the USA to Saudi Arabia, from Spain to Japan. It has become the business card of Walloon. The government took a stake in the company in the 1980s due the impending bankruptcy of the company. A Val Saint Lambert piece, famous for its marvellous double-coloured cut crystal, is a sought-after collector’s item or an expensive business gift, also for princes and diplomats. The company for instance supplied the glass seats (amongst others, because of the ‘frigidity’ of the material) for the World Exhibition in Sevilla. The offering has been broadened and modernised since, though the manufacturing of the unique pieces is still artisanal.
The lot will be securely packaged and shipped with insurance in fitting (possibly double) packaging.
